Transcription of field dispatch from  Colonel J. Warren Grigsby of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry to Joe Wheeler

HdQrs Grigsby’s Cavalry
Dix River Bridge (Lancaster-Danville [Road])

Oct. 12th, 1862.  11A.M.

{To: Colonel Wheeler, Commanding 9th Cav. Brigade]

Col.

I have the honor to report that my pickets are extended on this road to Danville to within 5 1/2 miles of that point, and my vedettes report nothing in that direction.  Just before receiving your orders of this date, I had started a scouting party under Lieut. Col. Napler with orders to proceed to Stanford by the upper crossing if not compelled to fall back.  I will report anything that may come to my knowledge promptly.

Thank you for your prompt attention to the wants of my command. I will endeavor to discharge my whole duty in the responsible position to which I have been assigned.  In reporting to Genl. Hardee this morning I applied for Enfield Rifles for my command.  Will you do me the favor to support my application as you can testify to the steadiness of my raw recruits under fire.

I am, Colonel, Respectfully
Your Obedient Servant

J. Warren Grigsby
Col. Commanding
